Colorado school district test driving Blue Bird autogas bus

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  -- Colorado Springs School District 11 is testing a school bus this year that is powered by propane.

District officials say they will evaluate its performance, reliability and fiscal viability as a potential alternative to school buses that run on gasoline and diesel.

Colorado Springs television station KKTV reports student from Wasson High School, Galileo School of Math and Science and Scott Elementary School were the first to ride the bus Monday.

The district says the roughly $97,000 propane-powered bus is comparable in cost to a 65-passenger diesel bus. The district is paying $5,000 per quarter this year for the bus under an agreement with a lease-to-buy option.

District officials say the propane-powered bus has few emissions, and the fuel is less expensive than gasoline.
