NPGA says immediate action necessary from industry and fleets to stop natural gas from becoming Congress' "winning" alternative fuel option!

Washington, D.C. -- The National Propane Gas Association learned last night that two amendments affecting the future of the propane autogas market may be voted on in the U.S. Senate as early as today, March 8. The amendments are a part of a transportation bill being considered in Congress. A complete transcript of NPGA's communications to its stakeholders follows.

Immediate Contact with Your Senators Needed to Prevent Congress from Declaring Natural Gas the "Winning" Alternative Vehicle Fuel in the Marketplace

NPGA learned late last night that two amendments to a major Surface Transportation bill will be offered in the U.S. Senate beginning possibly as early as this afternoon. NPGA strongly supports one amendment, but just as strongly opposes the other.

The amendment we support will be offered by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) to extend for 2012 the 50 cent per gallon tax credit for both propane and natural gas used in vehicles and forklifts and for refueling infrastructure. NPGA strongly supports this amendment since it contains 2 out of 3 credits included in the Propane Gas Act.

The amendment we oppose will be offered by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) to grant favorable tax status only for natural gas used in vehicles. This amendment is a version of the NAT GAS Act that T. Boone Pickens has supported so publicly.

America's propane marketers and propane consumers oppose setting an energy policy that singles out one alternative vehicle fuel for favored tax status. Such a policy would fly in the face of fairness, not to mention existing federal tax policy of fuel neutrality and parity in the marketplace for alternative fuels.

Your active support is needed immediately, because these amendments could come up as early as today. Please call your Senators to support the Stabenow amendment and oppose the Menendez amendment. Click here for a list of Senators.

When you contact your Senators' offices, please use the following as a guide for the call.

  1. Tell them you are from their State and wish to speak with the energy or tax aide. (If they don't put you in their voice mail and ask to take a message, follow suggestions below)
  2. When you get to the aide, give them a very brief description of your company.
  3. Urge them to support the Stabenow amendment (Amendment #1812) but oppose the Menendez amendment (Amendment #1782) to the Highway bill.
  4. The Stabenow amendment extends the fuel and refueling infrastructure tax credits for both propane and natural gas. The Menendez amendment would be tremendously unfair to the tens of thousands of consumers using propane as a fuel in vehicles and forklifts since it would only advantage natural gas.

Thank you in advance for your help! Only with your active grassroots participation can we stop the natural gas vehicle industry from destroying propane's competitiveness in the marketplace.
